This poignant work captures an emotional experience in which Inglês, interacting as an avatar, connects with two other avatars: Lady Phoenix and Enara Nazarova. It is a powerful showcase of co-presence. Co-presence is the idea of being in the same place or time as others, or the feeling of being connected to others.
During an interview at Crypto Fashion Week, Damara shared her emotional journey as she discussed her mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis. In this virtual space, her entire body masked beautifully as K-Yanda, Ingles felt a sense of safety in sharing this deeply personal story—not in her physical form, but as an avatar surrounded by “metafriends.”
An avatar like the mask worn in sacred rituals throughout the Global South symbolically occupies the liminal space between inner and outer worlds.
The mask, as a threshold to a liminal space, provides a doorway for confronting memories and emotions that may otherwise remain hidden. In the metaverse, these masked virtual entities, akin to gods of old, create emotionally safe environments, enabling Inglês to connect deeply with her experiences, her identity, and the memory of her mother.
