Info

Christian Skjødt Hasselstrøm, during his visits to the WRO Art Center as part of the EMAP 2024 residency, is developing an art project titled Scan. This project will be showcased at the WRO 2025 Biennale – Qualia.

Dec 13, 2024 / Thu / 6:00 PM work in progress sound performance / open meeting with the artist

Scan is a kinetic sound installation that explores inaccessible phenomena from our immediate surroundings using advanced experimental detector technology. It extends and explores human sensory and cognitive capacities.

Scan employs an array of rotating detector systems that directionally capture and amplify signals in the microwave range.

This part of the electromagnetic spectrum —a region densely populated by human technologies— is highly versatile, supporting a wide variety of communication and observation, from everyday technology (such as mobile phones, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi) to advanced scientific studies (such as satellite communication, radar, and radio astronomy).

The project is a continuation of Skjødt Hasselstrøm’s artistic research and work. Where previous works have focused on natural phenomena such as electromagnetic energy (ÆTER, 2017), radiation from the Sun (The Receiver, 2019), and cosmic rays (μ, 2022 and Myriads, 2024), Scan examines phenomena in our immediate surroundings that are being created by human beings.

Christian Skjødt Hasselstrøm (DK) operates at the convergence of sound, visual practice, and scientific inquiry.

With a deep interest in the (limited) sensory and cognitive capacities of the human being, particularly in the imperceptible that constitutes an essential part of our relation to the world, Skjødt Hasselstrøm utilizes technology as a tool for an extended perception or cognition, with the artworks as facilitating thresholds between our sensory apparatus and phenomena. His works investigate alternative environments of sensing and relating to the surroundings, proposing situations and spaces for reflection and contemplation.

Skjødt Hasselstrøm’s works have been presented at art institutions, venues, and festivals worldwide and awarded by Japan Media Arts Festival, Prix Ars Electronica, Edigma Semibreve, and the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen’s Foundation, among others. Skjødt Hasselstrøm holds a Master’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark and is currently based in Copenhagen.

The collaborating artist, Kaj Nielsen is a Danish development engineer and autodidact metal artisan with a strong multidisciplinary approach.

He has served as a leading development engineer in the research and innovation department at the Bang & Olufsen from 1988 to 2024. Since 1997, Nielsen has specialized in restoring artifacts in brass and bronze, as well as casting.

For Scan, Nielsen plays a crucial role in the construction of the brass antennas, combining technical expertise with artistic craftsmanship.
