Katharina Swoboda initiates the new artist-in-residence program for media artists based in Austria.

Katharina Swoboda’s project is based on a critical inquiry of the WRO’s audiovisual archives from the feminist position. The artist is especially interested in hybrid video formats between documentation and a work of art. As departure for her interaction with the archive shall serve two video documentations: of the interactive installation by Jill Scott, Frontiers of Utopia (1995), and a to-camera-performance by Anna Płotnicka, Non-finite Installation (1997).

Presentation of the research results of the residency project will take a place on 25 October 2016 at 5 PM in the Media Library of the WRO Art Center.

Katharina Swoboda’s (born 1984) work is predominantly video-based, but she also uses photography, installation and performance. In 2012 she graduated in Transmedia Art from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and since 2014 she has been a student of the transdiciplinary PhD programme at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Katharina’s works have been internationally shown in selected venues in Vienna, Houston, Panamá, London, Budapest and Hamburg. She has received several scholarships and has participated in artists-in-residence programs, such as the KAMOV City of Rijeka residence in Croatia and the Nida Art Colony in Lithuania. Swoboda is member of the Vienna-based Golden Pixel Cooperative, engaged in contemporary video practices on theoretical and practical level, she lives and works between Hamburg, Vienna and Graz.
