SOUNDS EERIE – workshop with Brigitta Bödenauer

WORKSHOPS: October 11-13, 2017 / 5-7PM
PRESENTATION: October 18, 2017 / 8 PM

Info

Not about recording technology, sound editing nor field recording. By and with Brigitta Bödenauer. Inbetween isolation, estrangement and dreams of solitude. The visible and the materiality of sound.

Our relationship is normal, conforming. We share nothing but space.
– quote from the “THX 1138” film by George Lucas, 1971

Reflecting on manifestations of isolation and disconnectedness in everyday life, and discussing various forms of its representation and expression in media art and film. The workshop’s participants and Brigitta Bödenauer, artist-in-residence at WRO in October, are going to check where and how do these feelings manifest in the city’s soundscape. Testing sound as an impulse for mental images and developing together an experimental sound piece are the main goals of the three-day workshop taking place at the WRO Art Center and in Wroclaw’s public spaces.

PROGRAM OF THE WORKSHOP:

October 11, 2017 / 5 PM – 7 PM
Introduction – starting point for the workshop is Brigitta Bödenauer’s research of the the WRO collection. Based on it, she presents her findings and delivers general introduction of the subject; screening of video examples and discussing how sound enhances the notion of isolation and alienation in the chosen video art pieces; brainstorming on manifestations of different phenomena in the city (personal, historic, political) and how the sound can reflect it.

October 12, 2017 / 5 PM – 7 PM
Audio recordings in the city – recording-walks (the participants will collect sounds using their phones and headphones).

October 13, 2017 / 5 PM – 7 PM
Listening to the collected sounds, discussing the results and deciding about the selection of sounds to be used for presentation.

October 18, 2017 / 8 PM
Presentation – experimental live act with collaboration of the workshop participants. The live-mixed composition created from the collected sounds will be accompanied by improvised performative excercises centered around the issues of sound-space-light-darkness-movement-presence-isolation and caried out by all participants present in the gallery. Want to exercise with us? Come and bring your flash lights or other mobile light sources.
