Start REVERSO – the exhibition opening the Media Art Biennale WRO 2021 has been dispersed in several (nearby) locations and presents selected installations as a prelude to the successive events and the program developed by the end of the year.

Contrary to previous editions, when the exhibitions and shows that opened the WRO Biennale presented the biennial program almost in its entirety, giving the opportunity to directly confront the participating artists with a large audience, the first exhibition is the result of focusing on individual works, extensive installations that annex the space of a given place in the whole. The joint exhibition is created only by the viewer’s unhurried journey between places of presentation, individual galleries in real space, and/or a visit to the web. REVERSO is an encouragement to experience art, to build understanding by circulating between different areas, points of reference, nodes of meanings, interpretations, and feelings, observations from different perspectives, combining own experiences and reflections resulting from changing dimensions and circumstances.

European tradition sees art on the side of universals. Art, especially ancient art, is tempting to see it as a manifestation of perfection. The more we want to place art on the side of the absolute, an autonomous genius radiating its justification, the more disappointing we must be in contact with the current art. In the face of the absolute and its emanation, even if they are only a product of a historically simplified image (fed by us), admiration prevails, which makes contact with art a safe and secure state. And certainly much less demanding than the need for reflection based on uncertain verification, unclear premises, burdened with the risk of excessive trust, and conscious or intuitive selection of points of support for our judgments. We are more willing to consume universals than participate in their construction. Meanwhile, contemporary art requires at the outset, not so much admiration as participation.
