The installations comprising In Stealthy Flight I Pursued Her II are sophisticated media compositions created from video recordings, photograms and stills culled from film narratives.
In Stealthy Flight I Pursued Her is a hypnotic amalgam of televisual imagination melding excerpts from a video diary of the artist’s travels in the United States, camouflaged references to the work of Edward Hopper, Alfred Hitchcock and other artists who fascinate Gustowska, and images of Gustowska herself, overlapping on different levels. All these elements intertwine in mutually interactive relations that are possible only in a digital media landscape.

But the exhibition is not a reference to the butterfly effect or the moth effect in the usual sense. It generates an uneasiness that spreads to everything within the field of vision: the back of a person’s head, the furrowed face of a cliff, an anonymous crowd on a bridge…
The unsettling image of an exotic butterfly and the title’s veiled allusion to Aeschylus’s Furies draw the viewer into an enigmatic journey laden with shifting emotions and intrigues hidden in the seemingly commonplace scenes in the round projected images.
Izabella Gustowska was born in Poznań, where she currently lives and works. In 1972 she graduated from the State School of Fine Arts (now the University of FineArts) in Poznań. As a Full Professor she teaches at her alma mater, running the Multimedial & Performance-Art Activity Studio in the Department of Multimedia Communication, and at the School of Humanities and Journalism, where she teaches graphics.
Gustowska, who is regarded as one of the most interesting Polish video artists, works in diverse media including photography, painting, graphics, performance and multimedia installations.
Gustowska’s works can be found in numerous collections of prestigous institutions, and her works have also been presented at the Venice Biennale and twice at the the Biennale in São Paulo.
As a curator Gustowska has organized numerous exhibitions and artistic events.
About exhibition
(PL) Łącząc wideo i fotografię oraz mieszając tajemnicze zapisy wideo z kadrami wyłuskanymi z filmowych narracji, autorka zachęca widzów do odbycia niepokojącej podróży, domyślania się emocjonalnych, czy wręcz kryminalnych intryg ukrytych pod pozornie zwyczajnymi scenami.
Wrażenia i sensy ekspozycji budują dodatkowo wszechotaczający, zmiksowany dźwięk trzepotu skrzydeł motyla, wydające się wędrować czerwone punkty świetlne oraz wibrujące między obrazami promienie.
Wystawa tytułem nawiązuje do sławnej, wielokrotnie wznawianej powieści kryminalnej, napisanej w latach 60. przez polskiego pisarza Joego Alexa (pseudonim Macieja Słomczyńskiego, tłumacza m.in. Ulissesa Jamesa Joyce’a) Cichym ścigała go lotem.

Urodzona w Poznaniu, gdzie mieszka i pracuje. Ukończyła poznańską PWSSP (dziś Uniwersytet Artystyczny). Jako profesor zwyczajny uczy na macierzystej uczelni, prowadząc Pracownię Działań Performatywnych i Multimedialnych na Wydziale Komunikacji Multimedialnej oraz w Wyższej Szkole Nauk Humanistycznych i Dziennikarstwa na kierunku Grafika.
Realizuje prace w obszarze różnych mediów, jest uważana za jedną z najciekawszych polskich artystek posługujących się techniką wideo, zajmuje się także fotografią, grafiką, malarstwem, performansem i instalacjami.
Jej prace, prezentowane na licznych wystawach indywidualnych i zbiorowych, w tym podczas tak prestiżowych wydarzeń, jak Biennale Sztuki w Wenecji i – dwukrotnie – Biennale w São Paulo, znajdują się w kolekcjach wielu znaczących instytucji sztuki na świecie. Jako kuratorka przygotowała wiele wystaw i wydarzeń artystycznych. Pracuje cyklami. Obecny, realizowany od 2008 roku, to cykl pod nazwą Struny Czasu.
